Glasgow Centre for Population Health (GCPH) generate insights and evidence, create new solutions and provide leadership for action to improve health and tackle inequality. GCPH works across the boundaries of research, policy, implementation and community life to shape a healthier future for Scotland. It focuses on bringing people with different perspectives together to commit to fresh thinking and approaches to improve Glasgow’s health.
GCPH overall aim is to gain clearer understanding of which factors are contributing to excess mortality; and help to formulate policy recommendations to address this new understanding. This involves extensive consultation and research. It also leads GCPH to create engagement projects such as Civic Conversation, a high level conference of healthcare providers, influencers and thinkers. To derive benefit GCPH wanted the experience of the conference to remain with the participants: something more than just a transcript of the event. Artist Jennifer Williams was commissioned to create a narrative of the event as a series of drawings and notes.
We wanted to create a document that would be recognised as a primary source of great value. To do this we created a book out of Jennifer’s drawings with little or no added text, apart from her own handwritten notes. A rich but simple print production included single colour printing (black) hand embellished with gold elements. The hand finishing was a reference to the value of the knowledge and Jennifer’s capture of it at primary source.
