Identity Papers

Client

The British Council creates international opportunities for the people of the UK and other countries and builds trust between them worldwide. It is active across six continents and over 100 countries bringing international opportunities to the UK. Each year it works to connect people overseas with the United Kingdom, sharing its cultures and English language, the Arts, Education and the United Kingdom’s style living and organising society.

The Problem
A unique paradox exists for the British Council: while promoting the unique aspects of what it means to live in the UK, it fully acknowledges the multi-culturality of UK society. This idea is particularly relevant to its relations with groups such as the EEC, United Nations and other pan-continental bodies, where there is a similar need to endorse a diversity of approaches within a united whole.

The Solution
Conceived as a ‘gift’ to be given to friends and influencers within the ECC in particular, Identity Papers is a curated selection of contemporary cross cultural poems, plays and essays from writers working in UK. These included notable poets such as Keith Khan and Benjamin Zephaniah. We chose artist and Turner prize nominee, David Shrigley to illustrate the the material as the theme of the outsider plays a significant part of his work. Pieces within Identity Papers describe the pain of exclusion in humorous terms, frequently as a method of engaging the host culture, yet often, sadly, as a means of coping with difficulty, and Shrigley’s work employs a similar device. Identity Papers won a string of accolades, including one, to Locofoco’s surprise, from the King of Belgium!
