Museums Galleries Scotland

Client

Museums Galleries Scotland (MGS) is the lead strategic body for the funding, development and advocacy of over 340 museums and galleries in Scotland. Its membership includes all 32 local authorities, 162 independent trusts, 7 regimentals and 9 universities. Most recently its remit has widened to take on several major Scottish Museums and Collections.

Problem
MGS had become aware that its old name “Scottish Museums Council” did not fully reflect its remit of representing galleries as well as museums. In addition it felt that the term council sounded more elitist that truly represented the function and style of a subscription organisation. As a leading strategic body it had the opportunity to join its peers, Creative Scotland and Visit Scotland by assuming a Scotland suffix.

Solution
After a full consultation with all MGS members, a design collaboration phase we unveiled proposals which were then put to the vote. MGS members interests range from fine art to organic science to high technology. We proposed an approach based around the idea of access which is common to all. The marque developed is rooted in the symbolism of the doorway – which embodies the core principle of access. In addition, the gothic arch and natural forms such a whales jawbone influenced the design. the resulting marque was carried unanimously.
