Road Safety Scotland is funded directly by the Scottish Executive. It’s remit is to develop and co-ordinate Scotland-wide road safety initiatives and campaigns. Road Safety Scotland works closely with all local authority and police Road Safety Units in an attempt to ensure a co-ordinated approach to road safety in Scotland.

Problem
In 2004 research showed a link between increased road fatality and learning difficulties among young people. Road Safety Scotland sought to bridge the gap between learning at school and at home: often young people with learning difficulties are taught by adults who themselves have learning difficulties. The resource had to be geared to the widest imaginable social range and be suitable for both supervised and unsupervised learning.

Solution
a2bsafely is not only an online but an offline learning resource: a group of interrelated games and assessment tools that can be flexed by the user to create a highly bespoke educational experience. The brand name was invented by Locofoco. The type treatment uses a stencil in a conscious move to place the resource in a setting redolent of traffic sign and road markings. a2b employed radical educational techniques. For example it uses video and investigates multiple possibilities rather than teaching one set rules. The design opened ways of teaching road safety that have inspired other online educational resources in the field.
